By using the existing domain name and simply "adding pages to the site" in other languages, he thought he could save some money by not having to purchase additional domain names.
If you are going to translate an existing web site into another language or several languages, the recommended method is to use only one language per domain name. I suggest that you host the site in the appropriate country, as well (for example, use a .fr TLD for French and host it in France). If you can also set up a local office in that country, that would be ideal. When you set up a web site and domain name, you are setting up a business-and by establishing a presence in the country using that country's native tongue is much more powerful than simply adding a few web pages to your existing web site. When writing to produce more web site traffic you need to make your web site easy for others to read. It is ALWAYS better to write in laymen terms than to use long scientific terms or technical mumbo jumbo. You want people to be able to read the pages on your web site without getting a headache or needing to refer to a dictionary. Visitors should not have to learn how to "translate" your web site in order to understand what you're trying to say. Visitors will always exit quickly from any hard to read/ understand web site. Now, weve heard many people say that the benefits of translation of websites are for the big multinational companies that have large plans for specific markets, including having a local presence. However, this is not true. Granted that the opportunities for these larger organizations and the scale of investment for their website translation and localization would be significantly different, but the opportunities for smaller websites to boost their revenues are certainly not insignificant. Alternatively, you can also add a language translation tool on your website, which can effectively translate from English or any other language to Japanese. This way those who want to read in English can do so and those who want in Japanese or any other language will also get to read through your website. There are mainly two ways of initiating website translation into Japanese: Proofread and copy edit your work. Remember to tweak your website to the foreign audiences needs, and be careful and sensitive of word usage. You don't want to lose website visitors with a translation that comes across as offensive into any specific language. Japan has always been a fast-paced country; always the first when it comes to technology. They have always been the first to invent and buy the most advanced technology. Language should not be a barrier for such a competitive country. That is why website translation is such an important aspect to capture the Asian market, specifically the Japanese market.
